Spatial frequency discrimination: Visual long-term memory or criterion setting?
نویسندگان
چکیده
A long-term sensory memory is believed to account for spatial frequency discrimination when reference and test stimuli are separated by long intervals. We test an alternative proposal: that discrimination is determined by the range of test stimuli, through their entrainment of criterion-setting processes. Experiments 1 and 2 show that the 50% point of the psychometric function is largely determined by the midpoint of the stimulus range, not by the reference stimulus. Experiment 3 shows that discrimination of spatial frequencies is similarly affected by orthogonal contextual stimuli and parallel contextual stimuli and that these effects can be explained by criterion-setting processes. These findings support the hypothesis that discrimination over long intervals is explained by the operation of criterion-setting processes rather than by long-term sensory retention of a neural representation of the stimulus.

Multiple spatial frequency channels in human visual perceptual memory
Current models of short-term visual perceptual memory invoke mechanisms that are closely allied to low-level perceptual discrimination mechanisms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which human visual perceptual memory for spatial frequency is based upon multiple, spatially tuned channels similar to those found in the earliest stages of visual processing. To this end we ...
متن کاملAging and visual length discrimination: Sequential dependencies, biases, and the effects of multiple implicit standards
Younger (20-25 years of age) and older (61-79 years) adults were evaluated for their ability to visually discriminate length. Almost all experiments that have utilized the method of single stimuli to date have required participants to judge test stimuli relative to a single implicit standard (for a rare exception, see Morgan, On the scaling of size judgements by orientational cues, Vision Resea...

The retention of spatial information in visual short-term memory was assessed by measuring spatial frequency discrimination thresholds with a two-interval forced-choice task varying the time interval between the two gratings to be compared. The memory of spatial frequency information was perfect across 10-sec interstimulus intervals. Presentation of a "memory masker" grating during the intersti...
متن کاملMasking of spatial frequency in visual memory depends on distal, not retinal, frequency
Spatial frequency discrimination thresholds measured in a two-interval forced choice paradigm are virtually constant across inter-stimulus intervals ranging from 400 to 30,000 msec, demonstrating that an accurate representation of spatial frequency is maintained in short-term memory. This representation can be degraded by briefly flashing a grating during the retention interval. Moreover, this ...
متن کاملThe effects of CCK-8S on spatial memory and long-term potentiation at CA1 during induction of stress in rats
Objective(s): Cholecystokinin (CCK) has been proposed as a mediator in stress. However, it is still not fully documented what are its effects. We aimed to evaluate the effects of systemic administration of CCK exactly before induction of stress on spatial memory and synaptic plasticity at CA1 in rats. Materials and Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: the control, the control-C...
